New Boston United is a high school varsity hockey team comprised of players from New Boston Huron, Garden City, Crestwood and Airport High Schools.
The New Boston Huron Chiefs hockey program started in 1995. Over the two-plus decades of hockey, the member schools of the squad have changed due to a decreased number of hockey players at one school.
New Boston had its' own squad up until 2014.
Starting in the 2015 season, Huron High School entered into a co-op agreement with Belleville High School. This was the second co-op or Belleville who had teamed-up with the now closed Willow Run High School. The two teams jelled together well and remained a co-op program until the close of the 2018-2019 season.
With decreasing numbers again, Huron League rivals Flat Rock and Carleton Airport experienced the same problem with low numbers. All three high schools joined forces and worked together as one team. Sadly though, Belleville was dropped from the co-op due to enrollment limits placed on co-op programs.
In 2019 discussions with Garden City finally realized into a co-op arrangement bringing back Varsity Hockey to the Cougars. For about a decade, Garden City had skated with Crestwood HS and had their own co-op team. When Crestwood could no longer provide the number of hockey players to continue the program, the team and co-op ceased.
As we move forward, the four-team effort will work hard to make their team, schools and respective communities proud as they skate every game.
